    Hello Phil and Karen. You’re right, I can see it is a smoother operation when you are cutting 1 slab instead of 2 slabs at a time. The big factor is that it’s safer the last thing you need is injury down time. With the lesson Phil, taught we might have to nickname him the professor. Keep up the good work. Thanks for another good video.

    I agree with you 100%. Different location means different drying. I have been burning wood for 48 years and cut green wood down in the spring and summer and burnt it in the following winter with no problem. I'm in centra Pa. and yes red oak also. once a year every fall I check my chimney and haven't had to clean it in 30 plus years. I use a dehumidifier in the basement for a few days when bringing 2 weeks worth of wood in and never had a problem, but we burn our wood burner HOT, HOT a couple times a day. And yes I stack my wood. What ever works just do it. Great video guys

    It all depends on your market. Selling green wood is less work and less money. I have stacked and piled, now stack everything. I have the room now so went from double stack rows to single row stacks 12 ft apart, it dries faster in singles. I have had a long windrow of red oak it was dry and on stone. When we had a real wet humid fall it started growing mushrooms. Stacked everything since then. Excellent video.

    Piles are great if you want to sell an inferior product haha. It doesnt take a masters degree in thermodynamics to understand why stacking wood would be far superior than piles. For some reason people cant grasp the concept, or they just simply refuse to believe because they dont WANT to believe it. Great video phil!

    Air will not flow straight thru a pile but be diverted in many different directions. This allows more surface to get air to dry the wood. Piles have straight thru tunnels making it easier to see air flow with the TP.

    Excellent demonstration, Phil! We stack all ours too because we don't have that kind of room for the big bins or piles! Plus we live back in the woods and don't get the sun all of the time. Could you stack your jenga piles on a pallet to move them in the shop? Just thinking it might save you an extra step or two. 🤔 People think I'm nuts when I talk about freeze dried wood. They don't believe me when I tell them it dries really well in the winter as long as it gets cold and not that in between garbage.

      Thats our problem as well Tim not enuf land . I’m not sure how them jenga stacks would make the trip on a pallet from the wood yard out to the shop but I’m game to try it heck any time I can save is a bonus . I always figured that below 15 degrees wood seems to dry real good .

    As someone with some experience on a vertical you are spot on with why you do what you do on Buster. I would not double up with a splitter that fast! I do not enjoy black fingernails! I know a lot of channels are getting away from stacking and I agree it’s way easier but space is always my issue. Stacking is a must for me and I agree that more air flows through it as well as sun exposure is better. I’m no expert, but I can’t see why it wouldn’t dry as fast or faster being stacked. At the end of the day, we all have to do what works for us in our situation. Great video Phil .👍🏻👍🏻

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood 20 часов назад

      Over the yrs I’ve had a fair amount of smashed fingers using a vertical . Never gave it much thought till we turned buster into a hit rod just how fast things happen. That pine we do is just totally different than any hardwood being that it molds so easy . If I was doing all hardwood I’d probably figure out a different way but like you we are limited on space but I’m working on that . We’re trying to lease some ground from the farm to store pallets of wood on so we can be ahead for next yr

  • @BW35bucket
    @BW35bucket 23 часа назад

    There’s no way in this world how anyone could not understand the importance of stacking. The benefits out way the easy way of the less touching and piling wood. Your pine definitely is sensitive to molding. The one thing you didn’t hit on Phil and Karen. What is your inventory. Your volume of wood. Not guessing with stacked wood. Really good informative video. Be safe and stay cool.

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood 23 часа назад

      After we stack it on a pallet we don’t have to touch it again for bulk deliveries. For us it’s easyer to stack on our pallet out of a dump trailer compared to piling because come delivery time we would have to hand chuck all that wood into a truck or trailer bent over and standing on top of a huge pile of splits . I should have talked about that as well as it’s a huge time savings and ya right I always know what I’m delivering when it’s stacked on our half cord pallets .

    Great video guys! It's also easier for you to load your trailer when it's stacked on those pallets. Another thing is, your wood is stacked in half cord increments, If someone wants 2 Cords, you know and they know they are getting what they paid for. If the wood was thrown in a pile and you use your rock bucket to load your trailer, In my opinion I don't think you would get a consistent measure everytime like you do when its stacked because there would be different air pockets each time. I would be curious to see how consistent a 4 cord order would be if you used the rock bucket, assuming the trailer holds 2 Cords each trip. There is no question when the wood is stacked on your pallets. Thanks for the video.

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood 23 часа назад

      Thanks Jon, that’s exactly it. These 1/2 cord pallets let us keep an inventory of exactly what we have on hand and exactly what’s going out the door. That is vital to knowing how much we need to produce going forward based on how much we’re selling each season.

    There is no one right way to air dry your firewood. Large pallet bins of loose stacked wood work, large cones of firewood in loose piles work, the German style holzhausen stacks (combinations of stacked and loose pile in the middle) work, hand stacking in rows works. As for how fast firewood dries, I think that comes down to initial moisture content and species more than any of the other factors. Chris at In The Woodyard youtube channel has videos on stacking vs loose piles. He's done it both ways. I think the primary reason people stack their firewood, is they have a space constraint for the area to dry and store their firewood.

    • @joeahopelto8032
      @joeahopelto8032 21 час назад

      Chris has almost unlimited space for his wood piles. Using double pallets on the ground prevents moisture from wicking into the wood. The work process (wood size, species, conditions etc etc)determines what works the best. All of the mega firewood companies put their firewood into huge piles. There is no evidence piled of mold in piled wood.

    I think when in a hurry to dry it stacking makes sense but when you have time for production with no rush to sell a pile might make a lot of sense especially for bundle wood. I like to stack to move with my loader but it definitely slows down production in the moment

    • @AllenFamilyFirewood
      @AllenFamilyFirewood 23 часа назад

      It is a slower process Brian, but in the long run we know how much wood we have because each pallet is 1/2 cord. When we dump it in the trailer to deliver, it’s easy to know what we have. And when we’re making bundles, we know it’s had a good amount of time to dry. We’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, and right now we’re chasing our tails and learning even more! lol

    I did over 20 years in the firewood business I made all kinds of changes over the years I eventually went from stacking wood then selling it I could not keep up anymore. So I started selling all green wood off the processor into the dump trailer and onto the customer they all knew it was green I was doing bulk firewood about 40 to 50 tri-axle loads per year so about 945 tons of wood per year. So every one has to adapt to the market and the type of firewood business you are in or what works best the main thing is try and cut down on how many times you touch the wood. I retired from wood to be full retired but I will still watch you guys as long as you do videos

      Everyone should do what works best for them . Seems like every video we get the same comments always asking the same questions so we figured it was worth addressing it . Production is production and the end goal is the same make as much quality wood as we can with what we have .

    This is why I don't have a RUclips channel I don't want to deal with people I get more work done stacking and cutting my wood during the day instead of doing videos but I do appreciate all you videos

      Believe me, we’ve often wanted to throw RUclips out the window, but we’ve met so many great people through this, and going to the shows and interacting with everyone is great. So for now this is what we’re doing and trying to keep up at the same time 🤷‍♀️

    Ok,so its comfortable snd safe to do one piece at a time. Next question,,,,,, your "ugly pile" is some other peoples pretty good pile,,, and I've seen other folk bundling or bagging with wood you'd consider ugly,,, but it was a good bundle all the same.??? Yes, those wood people making piles with pallet sidewalls 15 feet wide x 60 feet long say are selling wet wood from inside the pile,,, guaranteed. Its lazy and dumb.

      We sell a lot of bulk wood to the campers half cords and full cords so that’s ware all our ugly stuff goes and ya right it looks better than what most others in the are deliver . I think in the right area of the country with the right spot piling works good lots of people have great luck doing it . Done the right way it will make dry wood all the way through the pile it just takes longer than stacking would in my opinion.

      Lets re phrase it,,,, piling wood 15 feet high, 40 feet long is ok,, as long as something is done with it later,,, 1 inch of rain keeps the center wet for a long time.

      I see in beautiful Germany, one big firewood operator (1000's cords) piles his wood,, but he has floor heating, and a purpose built air blowing system going up through the pile,,, that'll work

    Great informative video Philn Karen. You nailed it 100% ! Are you sure you weren't a rocket scientist in another life?🤣 Good explaining as to why your theory of drying works better. Thanks for sharing 👍 Never underestimate a farmer.🤣🤣🤣

      Thanks jimbo I figured it was worth doing a video on that instead of typing a bunch of comments each video explaining it all . I’m just like everyone else I like to do what works best for our situation . I tryed to be a rocket scientist once but they wouldn’t let me in the clean rooms once they read the back of my shirt .
